In this week’s accountancy career moves, partner promotions and hires at Johnston Carmichael, Alvarez & Marsal, Kilsby Williams, PwC, Addleshaw Goddard, HLB, ICAEW

Saffery has expanded the national corporate finance team into the south of England, with Hemal Pandit joining as a director in its Bournemouth office. An experienced corporate finance advisor, Pandit has particular expertise in the lower mid-market for clients including private equity firms, owner managed businesses, listed and private companies. He joins from RSM where he was an associate director, advising on a range of deal-focused engagements, specialising in due diligence and financial analysis.

Cowgills has announced three new partners after promoting Ben Barlow, James Greenhalgh and Jordan Heys, taking the firm’s partner count to 29.Barlow has been appointed in the deal advisory team.He joined Cowgills in 2011 as an audit graduate and transferred to deal advisory in 2015.Greenhalgh has been part of the tax team for 24 years and specialises in corporate restructuring. He is a qualified chartered tax advisor and advises property and construction clients as well as more complex owner managed businesses.Heys joined the business recovery team over 10 years ago and has contributed to the growth of the division working with accountants who do not provide a business recovery service, and directors of owner managed businesses.

Johnston Carmichael has strengthened its leadership team with three partner promotions, Gillian McColgan (tax), based in Aberdeen, Graeme Bain (restructuring), in Glasgow and Sally Hewish (audit quality, risk and technical), in London. The new directors are Ryan Milne (business advisory) and Keith Hamilton (general counsel). Their promotions are part of the firm’s commitment to growing its future leaders. McColgan and Milne both joined as graduates studying ICAS, developing their careers to become senior leaders within the firm. A further 92 people have also been promoted across the business. The promotions come ahead of the summer student intake, which will see 61 new recruits join the firm including 43 graduates, 16 JC Futures accounting apprenticeship students, and two university placement students.

RSM UK has appointed Rob Pullen as private client tax partner, covering London and the southeast region. His focus will be on providing tailored tax solutions for owner-managed businesses and high net worth individuals. He will split his time between RSM’s southern and London offices. Previously, Pullen was a partner at Blick Rothenberg and has over 15 years’ experience helping clients navigate the complex tax landscape.

PwC senior partner elect Marco Amitranohas named a new management board with current head of tax Laura Hinton replacing Marissa Thomas as managing partner and Hemione Hudson promoted to chief network officer, as well as taking on a global leadership role. Kilsby Williams has strengthened its leadership team, doubling its partner group to 11 with six internal promotions to partner. Lucy Creese, Stuart Evans, Dafydd Ford, Rob Meredith and Kaye Morris have been promoted from within the firm’s fast growing tax, growth and transactions departments, while Huw Sheppard from the audit, accountancy and payroll teams completes the leadership group. The announcement coincides with a major rebrand with a refreshed logo and website.

Alvarez & Marsal has expanded the corporate finance practice in London with the appointment of Rinesh Dookhee as a managing director. He brings 17 years of experience in corporate finance, with a focus on the consumer and retail industry, and specialises in company disposals and acquisitions, advising corporates, private equity firms and entrepreneurs. He joins from Deloitte where he was a director in the consumer & retail M&A practice.

Addleshaw Goddard has appointed Kyle Rainsford as partner in the London tax team, joining from Travers Smith where he led the real estate tax practice as a senior counsel in the tax department. Rainsford specialises in UK corporate and real estate tax, advising institutional real estate investors and real estate funds on the tax consequences of acquisitions and disposals, and financing.

HLB has promotedBettina Cassegraintoglobal director of professional standards and sustainability assurance at the accounting network. In her new role, she will promote responsible and sustainable business practices at HLB, and support clients in their strategic efforts on the sustainability front.

ICAEW has named Malcolm Bacchus as ICAEW president for 2024/25. He succeeds Mark Rhys and will serve a one-year term until June 2025. As president, Bacchus will support the implementation of ICAEW’s 10-year strategy and wants to highlight specifically the importance of ethics and building trust within the accountancy profession and the wider business community. He will also focus on the development of accountancy amid rapid developments in AI and new technology, as well as sustainability issues.

Duncan & Toplis director and head of technical compliance Stuart Brown has been appointed as vice-chair of the ICAEW ethics and advisory committee for the next three years. He will be integral to work on helping to maintain the standards of accountants and stressed that ethics was the foundation of being a chartered accountant.
